REQUESTS FOR PROPOSALS
For the week of June 23, 2008
TITLE: Large Grants for Public Programs in the Humanities
AGENCY: Pennsylvania Humanities Council
DEADLINE: July 1, 2008 (Intent to Apply Form)
ITEM: The Pennsylvania Humanities Council (http://www.pahumanities.org/ ) invites nonprofit organizations to apply for large grants for public programs in the humanities. Humanities grants encourage learning through public programs that involve humanities experts and have a strong discussion proponent. Examples of humanities programs include discussion groups that explore books or films, workshops, walking tours, panel discussions, exhibitions with interpretive programs and materials, and craft demonstrations that integrate conversations about the craft. The grant application process is open to all nonprofits, including arts organizations, history groups, and museums and public libraries. The overall goals of these grants are to expand access to the humanities by funding innovative programming that reaches non-traditional audiences; support experiences that foster an enjoyment of learning; create opportunities for Pennsylvanians to explore and discuss history, arts, literature, philosophy, and more -- and particularly how the ideas integral to these fields both shape and are shaped by the human experience. Requests of more than $3,000, with a maximum request of $20,000, will be considered. Intent-to-apply forms should be completed by July 1, 2008. The application deadline is September 2, 2008. The council also offers Quick Grants and Small Grants programs with rolling deadlines. See the council's Web site for complete program information and application procedures Visit the council's Web site for complete program information.

NEH and NEA Receive Millions More from House
By Grants Resource Center Staff
On June 11, 2008, the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee approved a bill that would provide $160 million each for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in FY 09, reports the National Humanities Alliance (NHA) (http://www.nhalliance.org/news/). This is an increase of $15.3 and $15.6 million over the FY 08 enacted levels for the respective agencies. The next step in the legislative process is a markup of the NEH spending bill by the full House Appropriations Committee on June 18.
NHA and its members are advocating for an FY 09 increase of approximately $32 million above the president’s NEH budget request and the FY 08 enacted level, which would return agency funding to the pre-1995 level of $177 million.
Chronicle Debunks Peer Review
By Grants Resource Center Staff
“The best way to find out what a review session is really like is to participate in one yourself.” With this, the Chronicle of Higher Education takes up the cry of sponsored programs administrators, GRC staff, and others who advise faculty members on ways to build proposal development expertise and increase their competitiveness as applicants. The Chronicle describes the typical peer review process, offers advice to first time reviewers, and provides online resources to apply to serve on a review panel. http://chronicle.com/jobs/news/2008/06/2008060201c.htm?utm_source=at&utm_medium=en
